If you own the digital Switch version of Minecraft, you may not need to pay again. Mojang says eligible owners can claim the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition free through Nintendo eShop until the end of January 2027 in most territories. Japan and Taiwan have small upgrade fees: 100 JPY and 30 NTD.
The Switch 2 edition launches October 27, 2026. Pre-orders opened October 7; that does not mean the new edition is playable yet.
The offer specifies digital ownership. If your family's copy is a cartridge, this announcement does not establish that it qualifies. Check the edition and price shown in your account before confirming anything. If the expected discount is missing, pause and ask Nintendo support rather than buying a second copy to sort out later.
Standard is the edition covered by the free upgrade. Deluxe and Ultimate are optional paid upgrades with extra content. You do not need one of those bundles just to use the Standard offer.
One detail matters if your kids share the screen: Vibrant Visuals is not available in split-screen or with some Marketplace content. The prettier lighting shown in promotional material is not a promise about how a shared-screen session will look.
Start with the copy you already own and the price your account actually offers. That is a more useful buying check than comparing all three bundles first.
