Is Marvel Rivals okay for kids?

I don't recommend Marvel Rivals for family play. After a few days on Windows PC, the frequent invitations to spend and voice chat being on by default on my account were enough to put me off. This review is based on my own play, without child testing.

Why kids want to play Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals lets players choose a Marvel hero or villain and use that character's powers in team battles. Its core mode has two teams of six working against each other, with other modes also available.

The appeal is easy to understand: familiar characters, colourful action and a chance to play alongside friends. Players choose heroes with different jobs, such as attacking, absorbing damage or helping teammates recover. The official store description explains how combinations of heroes can work together.

That describes what the game offers. It doesn't tell us whether a particular child will enjoy the pace, understand the controls or be ready to play with people they don't know. My testing for this review was adult-only.

What parents should know about Marvel Rivals

Free to start still means spending decisions

You can play without buying outfits. The developer describes paid extras as cosmetic, meaning they change how things look. But optional spending was still a prominent part of my sessions: I kept encountering invitations to buy things.

The alternate outfits are called skins. There are also bundles and a battle pass, a collection of rewards unlocked as you play, with extra rewards available through a paid version. Before agreeing to a purchase, look at the real-money cost, the currency and exactly what is included.

A costume bundle shown in my October 22 recording. This is one offer on my account, not a general price for skins. Screenshot: Shannon / MPC.

There are also random rewards. The October 2026 Pop & Win event uses chance-based costume draws. A chance at an outfit is not a promise of the one your child wants. Check the currency cost and event rules before spending.

Check chat before the first match

Voice chat means players speaking to one another through microphones. It was on by default on my account, which was a huge red flag for me. That is my own experience; I haven't verified the default for every device or child account.

Check both voice and text chat on the child's account. The game supports both. The official moderation policy describes detection, reports and review, but those systems cannot promise that every message or conversation will be suitable for a child.

Plan to finish the match before stopping

In my sessions, you needed to finish a match. That makes this a poor fit when the household needs a game that can stop immediately for dinner, bedtime or another interruption.

The September 2026 penalty policy confirms escalating matchmaking suspensions for early leaving. That means being temporarily unable to join new matches. Quick Match has its own penalty track. Agree on the last match before starting it.

Use the controls for the account and store actually in use

Start with communication permissions and purchase approval. The ESRB's device guides are a useful starting point. Microsoft Family Safety spending controls apply to Microsoft and Xbox purchases; they are not a universal block on Steam or other payment services.

For the fuller story behind my recommendation, read Why I'm not recommending Marvel Rivals to families. It covers the purchase prompts, confusing outfits and chat setup I encountered.

What playing Marvel Rivals is like

The menus added friction

After a couple of games, I found it difficult to work out how to get back to playing more. For a parent learning the game alongside a child, that is worth knowing: getting into the next match was not as straightforward as I expected.

Knowing Marvel did not mean recognising everyone

I know these Marvel characters, but some outfits changed their appearance enough that I struggled to recognise who I was looking at. Familiar characters did not remove that confusion for me.

This is a review of my first few days. I haven't tested how a child learns the controls, how much reading help they need or whether particular accessibility settings make the game easier for them.

About the play and screenshots

Only I played for this review, on Windows PC. The two screenshots are genuine frames from my October 22, 2026 recording of menus and tutorials. The recording does not show the voice-chat settings; that finding comes from my own play notes.

Official information was checked on October 25, 2026. The featured artwork is official Marvel Rivals promotional art; the in-article screenshots are mine. This review does not cover child-account controls or every mode and platform.

Which version of Marvel Rivals?

Tested on Windows PC. The current native platforms include Windows PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-platform online play is supported, but availability can differ by mode; this review does not test every platform combination.

About this review

Adult-only testing on Windows PC over my first few days of play, including an October 22, 2026 recording of menus and tutorials. Voice chat was on by default on my account; child-account defaults have not been verified.

Why Marvel Rivals gets this verdict

  • Purchase prompts repeatedly interrupted the experience I wanted from a free game.
  • Voice chat was already enabled when I checked my own account.
  • I found returning to play and recognising some alternate outfits confusing.

Who is Marvel Rivals suitable for?

Less suited to

  • Families seeking a game with little pressure to buy extras.
  • Parents looking for a straightforward first online game.
  • Households needing play to stop immediately in the middle of a match.

More about Marvel Rivals risks and settings

  • Voice chat was on by default on my account.
  • Repeated invitations to buy optional outfits and rewards.
  • Early leaving can lead to matchmaking penalties.
  • ESRB descriptors: violence and suggestive themes.
  • Online communication with other players.
  • Optional in-game purchases, including random rewards.

Chat and messages

The game supports microphone conversations and typed messages. My own account had voice chat enabled by default. Check the child's settings and platform permissions before play. I have not tested the full child-account setup.

Contact with other players

Team play does not mean a private group of family members. Public matching puts players into games with others, and communication settings matter separately from the ability to join a match. I haven't tested a friends-only family setup.

Spending and extra purchases

Paid extras are optional, but the frequency of purchase prompts bothered me during play. The recorded bundle is one dated offer, not a current price list. Review purchases and random-reward mechanics before allowing spending.

Stopping and playtime

Early leaving can bring matchmaking penalties. The recorded menus also show timed events. I haven't tested a child's stopping behaviour or measured typical match length.

Content your child may see

The ESRB rating is Teen (13+) for violence and suggestive themes. The UK Xbox listing shows PEGI 16. I haven't assessed how a child responds to the combat, intensity or character designs.

Parents also ask about Marvel Rivals

Is Marvel Rivals appropriate for kids?

I don't recommend it for family play after my own first few days. Spending prompts and voice chat being on by default on my account are the main reasons. ESRB rates it Teen (13+); the UK Xbox listing shows PEGI 16. Those ratings are separate from my recommendation.

Is Marvel Rivals really free?

Yes. The game is free to download and play, with optional purchases for outfits and other visual extras. Free access does not remove the purchase prompts, which were a major part of my experience.

Does Marvel Rivals have voice chat?

Yes, alongside text chat. Voice chat was on by default on my account. I haven't verified child-account defaults, so check both chat settings on the account your child would use.

Can you get a penalty for leaving a Marvel Rivals match?

Yes. Early leaving can trigger matchmaking suspensions, which become longer with repeated offences. Plan to stop between matches. Current policy does not publish a fixed penalty duration for every situation.

Was this Marvel Rivals review tested with children?

No. Only I played, on Windows PC. The review draws on my first few days, my recorded menus and tutorials, and official information. Child reading needs, independent play and child-account controls have not been tested.

Can Marvel Rivals be played offline?

An internet connection is required. The PlayStation listing specifies online play. Tutorials and practice activities should not be mistaken for a separate offline game.
