AI and Privacy vs Safety — Where Should the Line Be?
This is the one that gets uncomfortable the fastest.
Because as soon as you start talking about regulating AI or social platforms, someone will say we’re giving up privacy, and that’s where the conversation usually stops. Privacy is treated as the thing we can’t touch, so everything else has to work around it.
And I don’t think it’s that simple.
I care about privacy. Most people do. There are a lot of situations where it’s incredibly important, especially when you’re talking about personal data, identity, and just being able to exist online without being constantly watched or tracked.
But I also think we’ve started treating privacy as something absolute, when in reality it’s always been conditional depending on context.
If someone walks into a bank, they don’t get full access without proving who they are. If someone tries to do something that raises red flags in other systems, those systems don’t just ignore it because of privacy. There are thresholds where things escalate.
And I think that’s the part that’s missing from how we talk about AI and social media.
Right now, a lot of these platforms operate in a way where you can be almost completely anonymous, especially on free accounts. You can say things, search things, interact in ways that would raise concern in other environments, and the system’s main response is usually just to block or ban the account.
And that’s where I start to question whether we’re drawing the line in the right place.
Because banning someone isn’t the same as addressing risk.
If someone is using a platform in a way that clearly violates its terms, especially in ways that suggest harm to themselves or others, I don’t think the response should stop at “you can’t use this service anymore.” That removes them from the platform, but it doesn’t necessarily do anything about the behavior itself.
And I want to be clear here, because this is where it can get misinterpreted.
I’m not talking about normal conversations, or people exploring ideas, or even people asking difficult or uncomfortable questions. That’s part of using the internet, and it should be.
I’m talking about situations where there are clear signals that something is wrong. Not just one message taken out of context, but patterns of behavior that indicate risk.
Right now, the system leans heavily toward protecting privacy in all cases, even when those signals are present. And I think that’s where the balance is off.
Because at that point, it’s not really about protecting everyday users anymore. It’s about maintaining anonymity even when that anonymity is enabling harmful behavior.
And I don’t think those two things should be treated the same.
There’s a difference between someone having private conversations and someone repeatedly engaging in behavior that violates the platform’s rules in a way that could lead to real harm. Treating those scenarios the same under the umbrella of privacy doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
I think what’s missing is a clearer idea of escalation.
Not constant monitoring, not reading everything people do, but a system where certain thresholds trigger a different level of response.
You could think of it as a kind of layered approach. At a normal level, privacy is respected. People can use the platform, explore ideas, ask questions, and their interactions stay within that system. As behavior starts to cross defined boundaries, things don’t just get ignored or lightly moderated. There’s internal escalation. Maybe additional checks, maybe human review, maybe restrictions that are more targeted. And then at a higher level, where there are strong signals of harm, there’s the possibility of involving something outside the platform. Not as a default, but as a response to clear, repeated, high-risk behavior.
That’s very different from what we have now, which often feels like an all-or-nothing model. Either everything is private, or something gets flagged and removed, and that’s the end of it.
What I’m describing is more about accountability than surveillance.
And I think that distinction matters, because one of the biggest concerns people have is that any shift away from strict privacy automatically leads to overreach. That everything will be monitored, everything will be tracked, and people will lose the ability to exist online without being watched.
I don’t think that’s the only path.
There’s a middle ground where privacy is the default, but it’s not unconditional.
Where using a platform comes with an understanding that if you cross certain lines, especially repeatedly, there are consequences that go beyond just losing access.
And honestly, I think that expectation already exists in other parts of life. It just hasn’t fully translated into how we think about online spaces yet.
There’s also a broader piece here that goes beyond immediate safety, and that’s the kind of environment these platforms create over time.
A lot of the harm isn’t just about extreme cases. It’s about the accumulation of smaller things. Bullying, constant comparison, distorted ideas about identity, the way certain types of content gets amplified.
That’s harder to regulate directly, but it’s still part of the picture.
Because if anonymity makes it easier to behave in ways you wouldn’t in real life, and there’s no real accountability tied to that, then the environment shifts. Not overnight, but gradually.
And that’s where you start to see the impact, especially with younger users.
So when I think about privacy versus safety, I don’t see it as choosing one over the other.
I see it as deciding where the line should be drawn, and being honest about the fact that the line we have right now is probably not in the right place.
It leans heavily toward protecting anonymity, even in situations where that anonymity is part of the problem.
And at the same time, it puts a lot of the responsibility on individuals to navigate environments that are not really designed with their safety in mind.
I don’t think the answer is to remove privacy or to monitor everything people do.
But I also don’t think the answer is to treat all behavior the same, regardless of context or risk.
Somewhere in between those two extremes, there’s a version of this that makes more sense.
And we probably need to start getting a lot more specific about what that actually looks like.
