Fortnite refunds: what can be returned, and where the money goes

Find the right route after a Fortnite purchase goes wrong, whether your child spent V-Bucks, your card was charged or something was bought inside another game.

The short version

An eligible Item Shop return gives back V-Bucks, not cash. A real-money refund depends on the seller and purchase. If a charge wasn’t approved, use the separate unauthorised-charge process.

  • Start with the receipt and the account used.
  • Check whether the purchase qualifies for cancellation or a ticket.
  • Confirm what came back: V-Bucks, money or a reply from support.
What to do now
Find the receipt and check whether this was V-Bucks spending, a real-money charge or a purchase inside a creator-made game.
Should I worry?
Act promptly, but check the purchase and seller before counting on a refund. The guide separates the routes so you can find the one that fits.
Settings that matter
Check purchase controls at Epic and the store taking payment. Epic’s payment PIN doesn’t stop existing V-Bucks being spent.
If they’re asking because…
they bought the wrong outfit, ask them to stop using it while you check the return option together.

  8. Questions

First, check what your child bought and who took the payment. Returning an eligible item bought with V-Bucks, Fortnite’s spending currency, puts V-Bucks back into the game account. It won’t put cash back on your bank card. If the purchase used real money, the seller’s refund rules apply, so check eligibility before counting on a refund.

If the mistake has just happened, ask your child to stop using or equipping the item while you look. Equipping means choosing an outfit or item to use in a game, and it can affect the short cancellation window.

Which problem are you trying to solve?

V-Bucks spent in the Item Shop

The Item Shop is Fortnite’s main shopping screen. Start with Cancel Purchase or Return Ticket below. An eligible return takes the item away and gives back V-Bucks.

A card, PayPal account or store balance was charged

Find the receipt and use the seller’s refund process. Returning an outfit won’t undo the earlier real-money purchase of V-Bucks.

Something was bought inside a creator-made game

Read the in-island purchase section below. The usual Item Shop return tools don’t cover these purchases.

Fortnite Crew renewed

Crew is Fortnite’s paid monthly membership. Cancellation stops later renewals; ask the billing company separately about a payment it has already taken.

Nobody recognises or approved the charge

Use the unrecognised-charge route below promptly. This needs a different response from an outfit your child has changed their mind about.

Before you contact support, gather the date, amount, currency, seller, order or receipt number and account used. That gives you the information to explain what happened. Keep full card numbers, passwords and sign-in codes out of public posts.

An Item Shop purchase made with V-Bucks

A skin is a character outfit; an emote is an animation such as a dance. Many of these purchases have two possible return routes. Check the particular purchase, because the rules don’t cover everything in the shop.

Cancel Purchase is available within 24 hours for an eligible purchase that hasn’t been used or equipped in a game mode. It doesn’t use a Return Ticket. If that option isn’t available, an eligible purchase from the last 30 days may be returnable with a ticket. Epic’s eligibility rules explain the exceptions.

A Return Ticket is one of a limited number of returns available on the account, rather than a message to support. Accounts start with three, and tickets come back one at a time at 365-day intervals, up to three. If you use two today, you won’t get both back next year. Check the account’s return screen for what’s available. Epic’s ticket explanation goes through the timing.

In Fortnite, select the player icon, then the three-line menu → Support and Refunds → Return or cancel purchase. Choose the purchase and read the confirmation before accepting. Check how many V-Bucks came back afterwards. You can also use the Fortnite web shop: player icon → Return and Cancel Purchases → Show Purchases. Epic’s current menu instructions show both routes.

Some purchases are excluded, including passes, sets of rewards earned through play, their paid levels and gifts. Buying levels pays to move further along a pass. A bundle, several items sold together, must be returned as a whole if it qualifies for a return. If you bought its parts in separate purchases, each purchase needs its own Return Ticket. If you can’t see a return option, check the account, purchase date, product type and ticket balance. Cancel Purchase can only be used once per item; buying it again won’t reset that option.

Before confirming, tell your child what will happen: the outfit will disappear and the V-Bucks will be available again. Those V-Bucks can be spent on something else, so agree on that part too.

A real-money purchase

Check the seller on the receipt, even if the purchase happened inside Fortnite. If Epic billed you, find it in Epic Transactions. Self-refundable means an account refund option is available; refundable may mean you need to contact support. Under Epic’s refund policy, virtual currency, subscriptions and consumable items, things used up through play, are generally non-refundable, subject to applicable rights. The refund window for buying a paid game doesn’t automatically apply to a V-Bucks pack.

If Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo or another store took the payment, use that seller’s process. Epic’s platform refund directory links to the relevant help. Check the seller’s confirmation for whether it approved the refund, where the money will go and how long it may take.

A charge made without permission

If a charge was made without your permission, you can ask for it to be investigated. For an Epic-billed purchase, use Epic’s unrecognised or unauthorised charge process. Epic currently says the purchase must be less than 90 days old for that help, so report it promptly. An investigation doesn’t guarantee reimbursement. If another seller billed you, contact its support instead.

If you believe the payment method itself has been compromised, contact its provider through the official app or number on the card as well. Keep the purchase details and any support reference together.

A purchase inside a creator-made island

An island is an individual game or experience opened through Fortnite. Buying something inside one can have different rules from buying an outfit in the main Item Shop.

Epic says these in-island purchases are final and don’t use the usual Cancel Purchase or Return Tickets. For a transaction problem, its in-island help page explains how to report it through Transactions → Developer Islands. Reporting doesn’t guarantee a return. If the problem is an unauthorised real-money charge, find the seller and use the charge process above.

Is the FTC refund programme still open?

No. The US Federal Trade Commission’s deadline for new claims was 9 July 2025. If your family already filed one, check the FTC’s Fortnite refunds page for updates. That programme is separate from the Item Shop returns and seller refund requests described here.

What should I change afterwards?

Set purchase approval where your child’s payments actually happen. Epic’s parental payment PIN, a code used to approve a purchase, covers Epic real-money payments. It doesn’t cover console-store bills or spending V-Bucks already in the account. Check that store’s controls too, then agree on how any remaining V-Bucks can be used. Epic’s purchase-control guide includes platform links.

Keep a short note of the result: what was removed, whether V-Bucks came back, whether a payment refund was approved or whether you’re waiting for support. Save any reference number with the receipt so you have it if you need to follow up.

Questions parents ask

Will a Fortnite refund put money back on my card?

An Item Shop return gives back V-Bucks. A real-money refund depends on the seller, purchase and payment method. Check the seller’s confirmation for where the money goes.

Why is the return button missing?

Check the account, purchase date, item type and available tickets. Using or equipping an item can affect cancellation, and some purchases are excluded. Use the help for that particular seller or purchase.

Does cancelling Crew refund the last payment?

No. Cancellation stops future renewals. If you want an earlier payment back, ask the billing company separately.
