  9. Questions

Your child can start playing Fortnite’s main free games without buying anything extra. The spending questions begin with outfits, rewards earned through play and monthly memberships. Before agreeing to one, check what your child will get, how you’ll pay and whether there will be another bill next month.

“I need V-Bucks” can mean several things. V-Bucks are Fortnite’s spending currency, bought with real money or received through some rewards. Ask your child to show you the offer: are they hoping for a character outfit, a reward pass, a gift for a friend or something inside another creator’s game?

What the words mean

V-Bucks are the currency you’ll see on Fortnite’s shop prices. A skin, also called an outfit, changes how a character looks. An emote is an animation or action the character performs, such as a dance. Your child may want these to use around friends; they don’t need them to start playing.

A pass offers a set of rewards tied to progress through play. Buying its premium, or paid, part doesn’t put every pictured item straight into your child’s account. The Battle Pass, OG Pass, LEGO Pass and Music Pass are separate offers, so check which one they mean.

Fortnite Crew is a subscription that renews and charges again unless you stop it. Its current offer includes access to passes, special items and V-Bucks each month. Before treating it as a one-off treat, check the current benefits and renewal terms.

What the Canadian prices looked like in my session

During my PC session on October 25, 2026, the V-Bucks screen showed these Canadian prices. They are the offers I saw, not a promise about your checkout today. Epic’s price announcement explains why older guides may show more V-Bucks in each pack.

  • 800 V-Bucks: CA$11.99, about CA$1.50 per 100 V-Bucks.
  • 2,400 V-Bucks: CA$29.99, about CA$1.25 per 100 V-Bucks.
  • 4,500 V-Bucks: CA$47.99, about CA$1.07 per 100 V-Bucks.
  • 12,500 V-Bucks: CA$119.99, about CA$0.96 per 100 V-Bucks.

A larger pack lowers the cost of each V-Buck, but asks you to spend more money upfront. The cheapest rate is not automatically the right purchase for your family.

The shop also showed a Doja Cat bundle for 3,200 V-Bucks and a Shadow the Hedgehog and Knuckles bundle for 3,600. Starting with no V-Bucks, the displayed 2,400 and 800 packs add up to exactly 3,200 for CA$41.98. The 4,500 pack would cover the 3,600 bundle for CA$47.99, leaving 900 V-Bucks. These are calculations from the recorded offers, not purchases I made.

That is different from an approximate dollar value. At the 4,500-pack rate, 3,200 V-Bucks represents about CA$34.13 of that pack. It does not mean you could pay CA$34.13 at checkout. Check your existing balance, available packs, any exact-amount offer and the final bill. These examples exclude any tax or adjustment added at checkout and do not subtract future Epic Rewards from the money paid today. A leftover balance does not have to become a reason to spend again.

What a pass does and does not buy

Your child may want a whole pass because of one outfit in the pictures. Look together at where that reward appears and what they would need to do to earn or claim it. Then compare that with the playtime your family is comfortable allowing. Buying the pass doesn’t guarantee they’ll reach that reward.

Epic’s March 2026 update set the Battle Pass price at 800 V-Bucks, with 800 available for completing it. The “completing it” part matters. Those V-Bucks won’t come back automatically, so it’s best to budget for the purchase without assuming it will pay for the next pass. The price update explains the reward change.

It helps to agree on unfinished rewards before paying: “We can buy this, but our usual playtime stays the same. Some rewards might be left at the end, and we won’t pay extra to finish them.” If that would take the enjoyment out of the purchase for your child, you can wait.

Crew is a subscription, even when your child stops playing

Crew's monthly offer in my PC session, 25 October 2026. The price and benefits shown are a dated example. Screenshot: Shannon / MPC.

The current US offer is US$11.99 monthly and includes 800 V-Bucks. Premium pass rewards generally require an active subscription to claim. Check the rules for the account’s particular subscription history, because older Battle Pass arrangements can differ. The current offer and Epic’s pass-access help explain the distinction.

Before subscribing, find the company that will bill you, the renewal date and the cancellation route. Cancelling normally stops the next renewal; asking for an earlier payment back is a separate step. What your child keeps and how long access lasts are covered in the Crew terms, which are useful if you’re considering just one paid month.

Your family may already receive Crew through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft’s wider games subscription. Check the linked account and whether the benefit is available before paying for Crew separately. Cancelling Ultimate would affect the rest of that subscription too, so check what the household uses.

Gift cards and balances are not all the same

V-Bucks are the currency displayed inside Fortnite. An Epic account balance is money held for purchases through Epic’s payment system. A Fortnite gift card may fund that balance; a V-Bucks card is a different product. Read the card and redemption instructions before buying one, including region and account requirements. Epic’s account-balance FAQ explains the distinction.

A gift card can give your child a clear amount to spend. Once it’s on the account, though, they may be able to use the resulting currency without asking again. Removing a saved bank card won’t remove the balance that’s already there.

Check the device too. Purchased V-Bucks on Nintendo Switch are kept separate from purchases on PC and other shared-wallet platforms. Earned V-Bucks and items bought with V-Bucks follow different sharing rules. Epic’s wallet guide explains why the same account can show different balances on different devices.

Some purchases inside games affect play

When I saw the dog Sidekick, I wondered whether buying a different companion would help me win. Epic says Sidekicks do not give a gameplay advantage. They are cosmetic companions, there for appearance and company. That answers the question about those pets; it does not describe every purchase across Fortnite.

Sprites are a separate feature. These are creatures used during gameplay, with abilities such as restoring health or helping movement, as described in Epic’s current-season notes. A Sprite’s ability is not evidence that buying a Sidekick makes a player stronger.

Creators can sell items and access inside the games they make for Fortnite. These might be things used up during play, lasting benefits or entry to an area. Because some change how the game plays, the old advice that Fortnite purchases only change appearances doesn’t cover every offer. Epic’s creator documentation explains these in-island transactions. An island is Fortnite’s name for an individual game or experience.

Ask your child to show you what the item does, which game it works in and whether it gets used up. Also check whether they know what they’ll receive or are paying for a random result. Purchases made inside a creator’s island work only in that island; they are different from outfits bought in the main Fortnite shop.

These purchases have different return rules too. Epic says they’re final and don’t use Return Tickets, the limited number of returns available for eligible Item Shop purchases. Check the in-island purchase help before paying, especially if your child expects to be able to change their mind later.

Choose a spending rule your child can understand

During the same session, I noticed “Leaving today” labels in the shop, along with familiar characters and bundle discounts. Seeing the bundle prices in V-Bucks made me ask what they actually cost in dollars. A deadline can make a request feel urgent without making the purchase necessary. Decide the spending rule before browsing together.

You might choose no purchases, a fixed allowance or saving for one particular item. With an allowance, explain whether gifts count towards it and when the next amount arrives. With saving, agree that a countdown in the shop doesn’t change the budget. A rule you can explain simply is easier to come back to when the next request arrives.

An outfit may matter to your child because they enjoy how it looks or want to use it with friends. You can understand that and still say no: “I can see why you like it. We’re not adding money today.”

One parent on Reddit said requests faded after they repeatedly decided not to buy. That was their family’s experience, and yours may be different. Choose a spending rule you can keep using, even if your child asks again.

Check the controls, then keep the receipt

Check the store that would actually take the payment. Epic’s payment PIN doesn’t cover another store’s checkout, or spending V-Bucks already in the account. Review those balances too, along with any control for paid random items. Epic’s payment-control explanation shows what each control covers.

Keep the receipt and next renewal date where the paying adult can find them. If you need to stop a bill, use the official Crew cancellation routes. If a purchase went wrong, first identify whether it was an eligible item bought with V-Bucks, an in-island purchase or a real-money charge. Epic’s return help and platform refund directory lead to the appropriate next step.

Questions parents ask

Does buying a pass give my child every reward straight away?

No. A pass can give access to rewards that still need to be earned and claimed through play. Look at the reward your child wants and agree on what happens if they don’t reach it within normal playtime.

Do Fortnite purchases only change how characters look?

No. Some purchases inside creator-made games affect play or access, and some get used up. Check what the item does, where it works and whether it can be returned before paying.
